Gorton’s Workings

These small quarries are thought to be in the same small quarried cliff face, northwest of Gorton’s Rift entrance. Mr Gorton lived at 34B Budbury Close in the 1960s and at that time, his garden consisted partially of a disused quarry in which a number of small quarry workings ran quite extensively underground. There is a capped shaft into Gorton’s Rift and is clearly visible from underground. The shaft top is now grassed over on the surface but was visible as an area of melted snow on the lawn in November 2010
