Underground quarry worked from at least 1720s with the earliest date found carved of 1725, this was the largest of Ralph Allen’s quarries and eventually connected to Coxe’s Quarry and Byfield Quarry . This quarry was named after the fir trees planted to try and disguise the industrial landscape created by the activity here. Church Quarry was incorporated into this larger quarry.
An interesting entrance beneath the Hadley Arms stables allowed quarrymen access via a stone lined staircase
Firs Quarry along with Byfield Quarry and Coxe’s Quarry have all been filled in due to their instability
