Owned by the Midford Castle Estate and Quarried by a William Smith between about 1810 to 1820, this quarry is adjacent to Jackdaw Quarry and has now been backfilled leaving just a visible tunnel. The tunnel is made of unmortared scappled freestone blocks, and has fallen in about 10 metres from the entrance. It undoubtedly led to underground workings. A tramway with an inclined plane led down to Tucking Mill Wharf on the Somerset Coal Canal now filled in. The stone here was relatively hard, only suitable for paving and William Smith ended up in a debtor’s prison in 1819.
