Waterhole Quarry

This was the name given for the eastern area of Spring Quarry where the spring for the Byde Brook is found. Also known as No.7 Corsham Quarry or East Lung since the Burlington bunker was constructed as it provided cool clean air from the eastern side of the bunker. Originally quarried in 1855 -56 by Pictor and Sons, there was an area in this quarry known as ‘Chapel Ground’ a sort of meeting place for the quarrymen. A culvert was constructed when the quarry was used by the military to divert the water into Box Tunnel where it passes through a brick lined passageway between and beneath the railway tracks to Box and on to the Avon.
